An Invitation to Breathe

May 29, 2020 by Mariana Gaviria

“Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.”- Thich Nhat Hanh

The average person takes anywhere from 17,000 to 30,000 breaths per day.  Despite it happening so many times, breathing is mostly an unconscious process.  In other words, breathing is something that happens without us having to think about it.

What happens in our bodies when we breathe is remarkable.  This finely-tuned process allows each cell in the body to receive oxygen and nourishment while at the same time expelling things not needed by the body.  This process is quite literally life sustaining.

Beyond nourishing cells and supporting life on the most foundational level, so much more happens when we breathe beyond the physical level.

Try it… pause… take a slow breath in… feel the way the air moves through your nostrils, to your throat and into your lungs… take a slow deep breath out…feel the warmth of your breath in your nostrils or on your upper lip.  Now do that a few more times…

How do you feel?  Has anything changed?

Our breath is both an automatic function of the body, and one that our mind can control.  We do not have control over all of our bodily functions, but we do have some control over our breath.  Breathing intentionally can make a tremendous shift in how we feel.  Slowing and calming the breath activates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for resting, relaxing, nourishing and healing.

Try it again… pause… take a slow breath in…. take a slow breath out… how do you feel?

This is an invitation for you to familiarize yourself with the power of the breath and to become curious about your breathing patterns and habits.  Do you regularly notice your own breathing?  Are there times when you notice that your breathing is quite shallow?  Do you ever catch yourself holding your breath?  How is your breathing affected by stress or other emotions like excitement, fear, anger or sadness?

As you move through each day, we invite you to pay attention to your breath more often.  The breath is an anchor that is available to you in each moment to support your awareness, your mood and your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Quieting the Mind

February 7, 2020 by Mariana Gaviria

“Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself…”

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, MD

Our mind has multiple facets. Our mind can function as a friend, kind companion and guide in certain moments and can push us in unhealthy directions in other moments. Our mind can feel vast, spacious, calm, clear and quiet. Our mind can also feel over-crowded, overwhelmed, full, busy and confused.

Emotions and memories, lack of sleep, less-than-nourishing foods and beverages, lack of exercise, adrenaline and other stress hormones all contribute to our mind being ill-at-ease and less equipped or able to find peaceful solutions to challenges during the fullness of our days.

The more relaxed we are, the more our mind is able to support moment-to-moment choices that serve us and our life to be more easy, graceful and joyful.

Wouldn’t it serve us, our loved ones and our community if we had ready access – even defaulted – to our spacious and relaxed mind more often than we spoke and acted from our ‘monkey mind’?

What can we do?

Time spent in Nature, in quiet contemplation, in meditation or prayer, focusing on our breath, exercising, resting in silence or with music, engaging in our favourite hobbies and passions … all of these help us to cultivate and strengthen our confidence, our hope, our intuition, our knowing, our truth and our connectedness.

We are inspired every day by the curiosity, courage and compassion of our community.

May we all take the time that we need to connect with the silence within… and may our growing awareness of our busy, stressed and fearful mind lead us to prioritize and practice silence so that we learn to speak and act most often from love – for ourselves and for one another.

Exercise in the New Year

January 9, 2020 by Mariana Gaviria

January is often considered a time to reset and to consider supporting our health with lifestyle measures that are within our control.  For some of us, this may mean prioritizing physical activity. Exercise guidelines related to cancer have recently been updated using Canadian and international research conducted in the last decade. There is now strong evidence that exercise improves cancer-related fatigue, health-related quality of life, physical function, anxiety and depression in people who have cancer and moderately strong evidence that supports exercise improving bone health and sleep.

Despite these known benefits, adopting an exercise program can be challenging. Although there are short-term benefits from single exercise sessions, we see the most significant benefits for our health when we exercise regularly. Here are some tips to help make exercise-related lifestyle changes sustainable and enjoyable.

Consider what makes exercise important and meaningful to you.
Some people may choose to exercise to support their mental health or sleep. Others may exercise to maintain muscle mass or strengthen bones. Find a reason that resonates with you personally. When feeling less motivated, remember these reasons. Plus, with a specific purpose in mind, exercise can be prioritized according to our time and energy in order to maximize benefits.

Little things count!
Simply avoiding inactivity improves health. Incorporating less sitting and more moving into each day can make a meaningful change in wellness. Puttering in the kitchen, doing projects in the shop, walking to the kitchen for water – all of these little activities improve health compared with being consistently sedentary.

Start with a realistic goal.
Start with something simple and easy, and do it regularly. Once you have mastered it, you can choose to add more. For example, walking at a moderate pace for 20 minutes, 3 times per week may work for you. Do that for several weeks. You may then decide you are ready to take longer walks or add a strengthening program.

Establish a routine.
Having a weekly routine can reduce stress and increase adherence. It can also help to balance different types of activities and provide the body with recovery time. Consider adding group activities to your routine for motivation and accountability.

Do enjoyable activities!
Perhaps you would enjoy walking to the coffee shop or through a lovely garden? Maybe you like a group atmosphere with music? Perhaps you love the water? Or being in nature? When we enjoy our exercise routine, it is much more likely to be sustainable. Exercise Therapists at InspireHealth can help you develop a weekly plan that incorporates enjoyable activities.

Create a back-up plan.
Most of us can expect that poor weather or low energy may interfere with our best intentions. Rather than skipping exercise, be prepared with a back-up plan. For example, if the weather is bad, perhaps go for a walk in a mall instead of outside, or walk in a swimming pool. If your energy is lower, commit to only doing the first 10 minutes of the planned exercise, and see how it goes from there. Any amount of movement will be beneficial and often getting started is the most challenging part.

Be kind and encouraging.
Our body’s needs are different day to day. The goal is to use a personalized exercise plan as an opportunity to learn, listen and respond with gentle encouragement. The Exercise Therapists at InspireHealth are glad to help you create a sustainable exercise plan based on your unique priorities and preferences. Call to book your consultation today.

With these gloomy Winter days upon us and with the With these gloomy Winter days upon us and with the ongoing restrictions of staying indoors, we must do our best to reap the daily benefits of natural light.

But, we don't have to be outside to do it.

We can increase natural light where we spend the most time, whether it's at home or the workplace. Here are some things we can do to let the light shine in to our room or space:

* Use accent mirrors or shiny objects to bounce the light
* Remove the drapes, add sheers or keep the blinds pulled up
* Decorate with a white colour palette to reflect plenty of light
* Trim any shrubbery obstructing the windows
* Add light-coloured rugs to dark floors

Of course, we can always try to take some time to get outside if we can, even for a short moment.
