November 2nd 2010 is Vitamin D Day in Vancouver SISU and InspireHealth partner-up to raise awareness!

October 28, 2010 General

Further to a request submitted by InspireHealth, Mayor Gregory Robertson and Vancouver City Council have proclaimed November 2nd as “Vitamin D Day” in an effort to raise awareness of what vitamin D can do to help prevent cancer.

There is a long standing relationship between SISU and InspireHealth, bringing to mind the old maxim that the best marriages are between two people with similar world views. In this case, both SISU and InspireHealth believe in a whole-person approach to health. Both organizations stress the role that people can play in using their own minds and spirit, as well as nutritional support and supplementation, to maintain health and prevent disease. As SISU puts it, “Release your inner strength®.” This is consistent with the views of InspireHealth’s co-founder and CEO, Dr. Hal Gunn, MD, who says, “We need to broaden our current illness treatment model to include support of health.” As Dr. Gunn points out, “there is a wealth of research evidence supporting integrated cancer care approaches, such as nutrition, exercise, meditation, emotional and spiritual support, and supplements.”

The fit with SISU is clear, both in terms of philosophy and practical strategy. Both SISU and InspireHealth are backed by research demonstrating that optimally supporting health while living with cancer can improve chances of recovery. The same approach applies from a prevention perspective. InspireHealth ‘s main focus is to help those who have already contracted cancer to improve their chances of recovery, reduce chances of recurrence and enhance their overall quality of life; while SISU’s premium vitamins and nutritional supplements help people stay in robust health and prevent diseases, including cancer.

The collaboration between SISU and InspireHealth helps generate public awareness and possibly increase funding and sponsorship for InspireHealth. Additionally, the partnership emphasizes SISU’s position as a manufacturer of premium quality vitamins and supplements which are developed in accordance with the latest, reputable, scientific research.

Important facts about Vitamin D:

  • Dr. Hal Gunn, CEO and co-founder of InspireHealth, points out that a research study published in the Annals of Epidemiology in July 2009 suggests that more than 100,000 new cases of breast and colon cancer could be prevented every year in North America with the help of vitamin D, and that deaths from these cancers could be cut by 75 percent.
  • Dr. Gunn adds that apart from its cancer fighting properties, evidence exists to suggests that vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of many common chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and even the flu.
  • Vitamin D helps boost the immune system and is essential for the absorption of calcium, which builds and maintains bone strength. It is obtained mainly from exposure to the sun or artificial sources of ultraviolet light, but is present in only a few foods, including fish with high oil content such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna.
  • The Vancouver region’s lack of sunshine due to rainy weather between October and March means residents are particularly susceptible to vitamin D deficiency and should definitely supplement their intake, says Dr. Gunn.

Don’t miss these special Vitamin D Day events!

SISU is gifting $2 discount vouchers for the purchase of SISU Vitamin D 200T at any Choices Markets, valid between November 2nd and 30th 2010. Fifteen percent (15%) of proceeds are donated to InspireHealth. Print the attached voucher and take advantage of this offer!

As part of the day’s events, InspireHealth will be partnering with SISU and Choices Markets to hand out information and to give out vouchers for SISU Vitamin D at the Waterfront, Yaletown, and City Hall Canada Line stations between 7:30am and 9:30am.

There are many sources of ‘externally-created’ There are many sources of ‘externally-created’ stress in our lives, especially during these restrictive times.

For example, our increased exposure to mass media can unconsciously sap our energy and have negative impacts on our lifestyle.

Fortunately, there are some simple solutions that we can use:

* Be discerning about what we choose to watch and read
* Read books and articles that celebrate human nature
* Remove ourselves from negative TV and social media imagery
* Spend socially distant/online time with those we enjoy

Let's be sure to watch for and minimize our external stressors. Most of us can be unaware of the degree to which we are affected by them.
