Susan's InspireHealth Story

Inspire Health Event Calendar February 24, 2026

I was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, at the age of 77. Before my diagnosis, I volunteered as a driver for cancer patients, and through their stories I learned how important it was to keep up with regular mammograms, so I made sure to go every year.

When I received my diagnosis, I felt sadness and fear. My brother had passed away at only 48 from leukemia, and my husband is a prostate cancer survivor. I was devastated, but I was determined to face it.

I first learned about InspireHealth while volunteering, when I drove a patient to an exercise class there. At the time, I didn’t realize it offered support programs for people with cancer. Later, when I needed care myself, I discovered how much support was available.

Over the past five years, I’ve attended counselling, nutrition sessions, exercise classes, the 2-day LIFE Program, and the Walking Groups. The Counsellor helped me manage my anxiety, especially in the beginning. The Dietitian answered my questions and created a plan that worked for me, and the exercise classes made me stronger, steadier, and improved my balance when walking.  All of this support helped me stay focused, calm, and positive.

InspireHealth has also given me friendship and community. I’ve made new friends, and we support each other, sharing walks, laughter, and understanding. Being part of InspireHealth as both a patient and a volunteer has given me purpose and energy. Volunteering in the LIFE Program and in the kitchen has shown me strength I didn’t know I still had, and the joy and laughter I’ve experienced have been so good for my spirit.

InspireHealth has changed my life — not only through practical support, but through emotional care, friendship, and hope. It gave me the confidence to face cancer, the tools to stay strong and active, and a community that reminds me I’m not alone. I am truly grateful to be part of InspireHealth and to share my experience with others who may need support too.
