February 23, 2010 - In a study published in the Annals of Epidemiology (2009 July), Garland et al. concluded that supplementation with vitamin D (2,000 IU per day) would prevent approximately 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer each year, and three-fourths of deaths from these diseases in the United States and Canada.

Approximately 3,000 research studies have been published in leading biomedical journals investigating the relationship between decreased levels of vitamin D and increased risk of cancer.  Evidence suggests that vitamin D supplementation also reduces our risk of many common chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes, and of even the flu.

Alarmingly, 97 percent of Canadians have insufficient levels of Vitamin D at some point in the year, according to a University of Calgary research report. This is of special concern between October and March when we do not get adequate sun exposure for our bodies to produce it.

“We simply have to do more to engage people in this simple, safe approach to cancer prevention and treatment,” states Dr. Hal Gunn, CEO and co-founder of InspireHealth, Canada’s foremost integrated cancer care centre.  "The Canadian healthcare system is in a funding crisis and the current treatment model is proving to be unsustainable.  It is time we look at simpler and less expensive options such as vitamin D to prevent and treat cancer. The time has arrived for nationally coordinated action to substantially increase intake of vitamin D.”

InspireHealth is initiating its own in-house vitamin D research study. Dr. Hal Gunn and InspireHealth’s Director of Research, Julius Halaschek-Wiener, PhD, will investigate whether increased serum 25(OH)D levels help improve prognosis for colorectal cancer patients.
